Rare and exceptional heavy 18K Gold bracelet by American Modernist Jeweler Ed Wiener. The gold is very textured, creating an interesting, dimensional, wearable sculpture.
The bracelet is comprise of 7 one inch links. Each link is connected to the next link with a small ring, one at the top and one at the bottom. There is a latch style safety catch, and also a secure clasp. The clasp is hidden when worn.
Mr. Wiener's early work was done primarily in sterling silver. In the early 1960s, he became interested in working with gold. The earliest pieces were done in 14k, then he began using the higher content 18k gold. Mr. Wiener attributed his interest in gold to a deeper understanding of, and an appreciation for the historical perspective of jewelry, an awareness he credited to his international travels at the time.
An interesting first hand account of his experiences, written by Mr. Wiener himself, can be found in the book Jewelry by Ed Wiener, written for the 1988 Retrospective Exhibition of his work at the Fifty/50 Gallery in NYC.
Ed Wiener died in 1991.
